Africa: A Comprehensive Overview

Geographical Characteristics

Africa, the Earth's second-largest continent after Asia, covers approximately one-fifth of the global land surface. Its borders include the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Suez Canal and the Red Sea to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

Regional Divisions

Africa is divided into five main regions:

  • Northern Africa: Comprising Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, and Tunisia.
  • Eastern Africa: Including Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
  • Middle Africa: Consisting of Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of the Congo, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
  • Southern Africa: Featuring Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
  • Western Africa: Comprising Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
